The book is the first publication of sources relating to the German death camp in Bełżec. Only two people from among over 435,000 deportees escaped death and survived the occupation. They were Rudolf Reder and Chaim Hirszman, whose accounts constitute the main part of the newest museum book. They are supplemented with testimonies given by inhabitants of Bełżec and neighbouring towns in 1945-1946. Each part of the documents – accounts by the escapees and testimonies by the witnesses – is preceded with a historical commentary.
